If you’ve ever watched Severance on Apple TV+ and thought, “I need that weird keyboard in my life,” well—now you actually can get one. A new limited-edition keyboard called the MDR Dasher is on the way, and yes, it’s directly inspired by the chunky, retro terminals seen in the show’s eerie Macrodata Refinement department.

Built by a company called Atomic Keyboard, the MDR Dasher is more than just a novelty. It’s a fully functional mechanical keyboard that plays off the vintage design of Data General Dasher terminals from the late 1970s, which served as the main design inspiration for the props used in Severance. The new version isn’t just about looks, though—it’s got some quirky functional choices, too.

First off, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: this thing doesn’t have an Escape key. Or a Control key. Or an Option key.

That’s not a design flaw—it’s intentional. The idea here is to channel the unsettling vibe of Severance by limiting the keyboard’s functionality in subtle but symbolic ways. In the show, employees are mentally “severed” from their outside selves, and the lack of these essential keys reflects that lack of freedom. It’s a clever nod to the show’s themes, but whether you can live without an Escape key is another story.

Despite its 1970s look, the MDR Dasher is fully compatible with today’s devices. It uses a USB-C connection and works with Windows, macOS, and Linux right out of the box.

The layout is a 70% compact style with 73 keys, and there’s a built-in optical trackball on the right-hand side—perfect for fans of old-school terminals or anyone who wants to ditch a separate mouse. There are two oversized mouse buttons too, which helps give it that authentic mainframe workstation vibe.

The keyboard’s dark blue and beige color scheme, aluminum case, and retro keycaps all contribute to the vintage feel, and based on images shared online, it’s one of the more visually striking keyboards out there.

As of now, there’s no official release date or confirmed price, but a placeholder listing once showed it at $399 before that detail was removed. That could mean the price is still being finalized, possibly due to tariffs or production logistics.

Atomic Keyboard is currently taking names for a waitlist, and it looks like this will be a limited-run group buy, which is pretty common in the world of custom mechanical keyboards. That means if you’re interested, you’ll want to sign up to be notified when the buy goes live.

It’s not just the aesthetic drawing people in. There’s something oddly compelling about using a keyboard that reflects the themes of a dystopian show. And the mechanical keyboard community has definitely taken notice.

Fans have already started discussing the Dasher on Reddit and other forums, with some even creating DIY versions of it based on early images and spec leaks. Whether you’re into mechanical keyboards, love Severance, or just want a conversation starter for your desk, the MDR Dasher definitely checks a few boxes.

This probably isn’t going to be your everyday work keyboard—especially with those key omissions. But it’s absolutely geared toward a very specific kind of user: someone who loves quirky gear, enjoys retro design, or just really wants to bring a piece of Severance into their real-life office. Whether that’s fun or deeply unsettling probably depends on how your last Zoom meeting went.

If you want to keep tabs on the MDR Dasher or join the waitlist, Atomic Keyboard has more details on their site. Just be prepared to work without the Escape key—figuratively and literally.
