XGIMI has launched two new portable projectors, the Play 6 and Play 6e, bringing some fresh upgrades to its compact projection lineup. These models feature a 360-degree gimbal stand for easier setup, improved brightness, and, in the case of the Play 6, a built-in battery for untethered viewing. Currently, they’re available only in China, but there are hints that they could make their way to global markets, including North America, Europe, and Australia.
XGIMI has carved out a reputation for small, high-quality projectors designed for both travel and home use, and the Play 6 series continues that trend. The Play 6 follows in the footsteps of the MoGo 3 Pro and is positioned as a direct competitor to Samsung’s Freestyle and Dangbei’s Freedo.
One of the most notable features of these new models is the built-in 360-degree gimbal. Unlike the previous Play 5, which only had a 130-degree rotating stand, this new design makes it much easier to project onto walls, ceilings, or any other surface without having to prop the projector up with books or tripods.
Both the Play 6 and Play 6e use Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology with a 0.23-inch DMD chip, delivering a native 1080p resolution. They can also play 2K and 4K content, though the projection itself remains at 1080p.
Brightness is another area of improvement, with these models producing 600 CVIA lumens (about 500 ISO lumens). That puts them ahead of many other compact projectors, but as with most portable models, they’ll perform best in dimly lit or dark rooms.
Other display features include 124% Rec. 709 color coverage, HDR10 and HLG support for better contrast, and MEMC motion smoothing to reduce blur in fast-moving scenes. These additions aim to provide a smoother experience, especially for sports or action-packed movies.
For sound, both projectors include dual 6W speakers with Dolby Audio support. The Play 6 gets an audio upgrade with Harman Kardon-branded speakers, while the Play 6e is tuned under XGIMI’s own sound system. When not being used for movies or presentations, both models can double as Bluetooth speakers.
On the connectivity side, there’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.1, HDMI, USB, and USB-C support. They also include screen mirroring options via AirPlay and DLNA, making it easy to stream content from smartphones and other devices.
The Play 6 has a built-in 20,000mAh battery, which provides up to 2.5 hours of video playback or up to six hours in audio-only mode. This makes it a good option for movie nights in the backyard or when traveling. The Play 6e, however, does not include an internal battery and needs to be plugged in for use.
Both projectors are designed with portability in mind. With dimensions of 96.5 x 96.5 x 207.6 mm (3.8 x 3.8 x 8.2 inches) and a weight of about 1.31 kg (2.8 lbs), they’re small enough to fit into a backpack or carry-on bag.
Setting up a projector can be a hassle, but XGIMI has included automatic keystone correction and autofocus to make the process quick and simple. The projectors run on XGIMI’s GMUI 6.0 operating system in China, but if they launch internationally, they’ll likely switch to Google TV, as seen in the company’s previous global models.
A few extra features make the Play 6 stand out. It comes with a mini Bluetooth remote with AI voice recognition, while the Play 6e requires users to purchase the remote separately. There’s also a Universal Mirror Set accessory for the Play 6 that allows users to create ambient lighting effects with hand gestures.
In China, the Play 6 is priced at 2,099 yuan (about $290), while the Play 6e comes in slightly cheaper at 1,799 yuan (around $250). While there’s no official confirmation of an international launch, the projectors’ listing on the iF Design Awards site suggests they could be coming to other markets in the future.
