Kwikset has introduced the Halo Select, its latest smart lock that incorporates both Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread compatibility. Designed to offer flexibility for users while enhancing home security, the Halo Select arrives with significant upgrades over its predecessors in the Halo series. Expected to be available by mid-November for $279, this lock positions itself as a modern and user-friendly option for smart home enthusiasts.

The Halo Select smart lock stands out with its dual connectivity options, offering both Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread. Users who opt for Wi-Fi can control the lock remotely through Kwikset's mobile app, without needing an additional smart hub. This provides a straightforward solution for those who want remote access to lock and unlock their door, manage guest codes, and receive real-time notifications of lock activity.

For those integrating the Halo Select into a more comprehensive smart home system, Matter over Thread offers a way to connect seamlessly with compatible smart home platforms such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Home, and Samsung SmartThings. This option provides longer battery life compared to Wi-Fi, which may appeal to users looking for greater efficiency. However, switching to Matter requires using a compatible hub, such as SmartThings or an Apple TV 4K.

One of the key features of the Kwikset Halo Select is the ability to transition between these two connectivity modes. If users initially set up the lock using Wi-Fi but later decide to switch to Matter, the Kwikset app allows for a smooth transfer of control to their preferred ecosystem. This flexibility ensures that users can tailor the lock’s functionality to meet their evolving smart home needs.

“Halo Select represents the next step towards Kwikset’s mission to provide homeowners with unmatched security and seamless control over their home security,” said Jeff Sandoval, Director of Marketing for Electronics at Kwikset.

“By offering both Wi-Fi and Matter connectivity, Halo Select fills a critical gap in the market, providing a versatile, integrated solution that simplifies smart home integration. We’re excited to bring this innovation to market and continue delivering trusted and reliable products that reflect the evolving needs of today’s connected homes.”

Kwikset has emphasized security and ease of use with the Halo Select. The lock features a numeric touchscreen keypad, allowing users to enter unique access codes. In addition, there is a physical key cylinder for manual unlocking. The Kwikset app enables homeowners to create and manage unique codes for family members and guests, providing a personalized approach to access control. For added convenience, a geofencing feature allows the lock to automatically unlock as users approach their home.

Another notable security feature is the real-time notifications delivered through the app. These notifications alert the user to any invalid code entries or attempts to tamper with the lock, giving homeowners peace of mind whether they are at home or away.

The Halo Select also introduces a door status sensor, which provides updates on whether the door is fully closed or ajar. This sensor, which uses a sleek magnet-based design integrated into the doorjamb, eliminates the need for traditional, bulky sensors that often detract from the aesthetics of a smart home setup. This is Kwikset’s first lock to feature a door status sensor, and its compact design makes installation simpler than similar options from competing brands.

Compared to earlier Halo models, the Halo Select offers a more refined, modern design. Kwikset has reduced the overall bulkiness, making it a more attractive option for homeowners looking for a smart lock that fits seamlessly into their home’s aesthetic. The new motor inside the lock is designed to be quieter, providing a smooth and discreet operation.

Installation of the Halo Select is designed to be simple and straightforward, requiring only a standard screwdriver. Kwikset’s app provides a step-by-step guide to help users through the installation process, ensuring that even those who are less experienced with smart home technology can easily set up the lock. Powering the lock is also convenient, with options to use 4 AA batteries or an optional rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, which is sold separately.

Kwikset has announced plans for a variant of the Halo Select, known as the Halo Select+, which will be released in early 2025. The Halo Select+ will feature an NFC tap-to-unlock function, providing an additional option for users who prefer a more seamless entry method.

As for the Halo Select itself, it will begin shipping to retailers soon, at a price point of $279, with availability both online and in stores expected by mid-November.
