Urbanista, a Swedish audio brand known for its innovative products, has introduced a new addition to its lineup – the Malibu Bluetooth speaker. What sets Malibu apart is its integration of Exeger's Powerfoyle solar cell technology, which enables the speaker to self-charge using both indoor and outdoor light sources.
Bluetooth speakers have become commonplace for outdoor and on-the-go audio needs. The Malibu seeks to enhance this experience by incorporating solar charging capabilities. Utilizing Exeger's solar cell technology, the speaker can harness energy from various light sources, potentially extending its battery life.
Sustainability is a key feature of Malibu. Constructed from recycled materials and boasting an IP67 rating for waterproofing and dust protection, the speaker aligns with eco-conscious values and is suited for outdoor use in various environments.
In terms of performance, the Malibu offers a playtime of around 30 hours on a full charge. When exposed to 50,000 Lux solar light (similar to a standard sunny day), the playtime can be extended by up to 15 hours. This suggests a potential maximum playtime of 45 hours, a noteworthy feature for those seeking extended use.
The companion app complements the Malibu experience by offering customizable EQ settings, real-time light charging updates, and historical battery data. This app-driven approach aims to enhance user control and optimization.
Beyond solar charging, the Malibu includes a USB-C port for traditional charging and supports stereo pairing with another Malibu for a richer sound experience. The speaker's design options include Midnight Black and Desert Gray.
It's important to note that Malibu's solar charging capability is subject to lighting conditions and usage patterns. While the idea of a speaker that potentially never needs conventional charging is intriguing, real-world scenarios may differ from the ideal. Urbanista's ambitious claims will be put to the test as users explore the limits of solar-powered playtime.
According to Giovanni Fili, CEO of Exeger (the company responsible for Powerfoyle technology):
“We continue to push the pace and boundaries of innovation as this is our third light-powered product launch in three years. To bring yet another world’s first product with Powerfoyle technology to market is something we are very proud of and we are excited to see the adventure people go on with Urbanista Malibu.”
As Urbanista joins the ranks of brands experimenting with solar-powered audio technology, the Malibu represents an interesting addition to the portable audio landscape. Its incorporation of sustainable features and innovative charging technology offers a unique selling point in a competitive market.
The Urbanista Malibu is expected to be available for purchase from late September 2023 onwards, with a price point of $149. As consumers anticipate its release, the Malibu marks Urbanista's attempt to push the boundaries of portable audio technology. Whether it becomes a game-changer or simply another option in the market remains to be seen.
