Some unfortunate news sparked a lot of discussion during the week of August 4th, 2012 on HomeTheaterReview.com. The news that long-established electronics chain Vann's would be filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy had a lot of readers commenting on our Facebook page about their thoughts. Most users expressed simple sentiments of shock and surprise, but several got into more detail.
Steve Jackson commented: "Last I read it was possible but not certain just yet - that they are in search of a new lender...I never wish bad things on any company - it's tough out there and many formerly successful ones are struggling - I hope they are able to hang on."
Raphael Victorian sympathized: "I know the feeling. I was with Ultimate [Electronics] and Circuit City. Sad."
David Susilo was more critical: "That's what you get when the entire business model is based on who got the lowest price."
Ryan Peddle came out in support of David: "Thank you David. You hit the nail right on the head. Without profit, companies will die. More people unemployed. They spend less, economy spirals."
Steve Stone's article "Some Musicians ARE Audiophiles" about his interactions with Chris Eldridge, guitarist of the band The Punch Brothers also sparked some comments. Rather involved ones at that. Here are a few from the article's comment section.
Ivan Halbach commented: "And don't forget to complement the iPod as a source. When used properly it outperforms any other personal product of the last 30 years. Our task, as 'audiophiles who sell' should be to teach the next generation how to make their toys sound better."
However, Rick Stehno took some offense: "How can somebody say that the majority of musicians aren't audiophiles? I am a musician and I haven't seen a poll on that subject.
"As for audio systems not sounding as good as live music, that all depends on the environment, type of music, the mixing quality at the concert, etc. I have been to many rock concerts and they sounded terrible, I couldn't wait to get home and hear the same songs that were done in the studio. Bloated too much bass, enclosed stadium with sound bouncing off the concrete walls, and so loud, my pants were moving from the air produced by Pete Townsend's amp. I have also been to orchestra concerts, jazz, blues, and rock concerts that sounded fantastic, a lot of times, you go to concerts just to see the person/group live, atmosphere, not necessarily for the best sound."
