Wilson Audio, the prominent high-end loudspeaker manufacturer, has introduced a remastered version of its iconic WATT/Puppy loudspeakers, marking nearly four decades since their original debut. The new Wilson Audio WATT/Puppy loudspeakers were unveiled at the High End Munich 2024 showcase and have now been officially launched globally.
The Wilson Audio WATT/Puppy loudspeakers were first introduced in 1986 by Wilson Audio. The initial concept was born from company founder Dave Wilson's ambition to create a portable monitor with superior resolving power for his recording projects.
The demand for the WATT (Wilson Audio Tiny Tot) two-way monitor led to the development of a separate bass enclosure, dubbed the Puppy, transforming the WATT into a full-range floorstanding loudspeaker system. Over 25 years, the WATT/Puppy went through eight revisions, becoming the world's bestselling loudspeaker above $10,000, according to Wilson Audio.
The new Wilson Audio WATT/Puppy loudspeakers maintain the angular, hand-sculpted design of the original 1986 models, incorporating significant internal upgrades to enhance performance. Each speaker features a 25mm carbon tweeter and an 18cm midrange driver, complemented by two 20cm bass units with cellulose composite cone technology. These components are housed within Wilson Audio's proprietary composite enclosures, designed to be "inherently inert," providing greater drive unit stability.
One of the notable advancements in the 2024 remaster is the use of Wilson Audio's proprietary capacitors, wound in-house to meet tight tolerances. These capacitors offer greater low-level resolution, enhancing the clarity and depth of sound reproduction. Additionally, the new WATT/Puppy speakers incorporate specially constructed internal bracing and vibration-damping materials to ensure a stable, noise-free enclosure.
Wilson Audio has emphasized customization with the new WATT/Puppy. Standard finish options include walnut, silver, and spearmint, but customers can choose from hundreds of potential combinations by specifying colors for the cabinets, grilles, and hardware individually. Each speaker also features a limited-edition medallion on the rear resistor panels, commemorating Wilson Audio's 50th anniversary.
The WATT module of the speaker houses the Convergent Synergy Carbon (CSC) tweeter and a 7-inch AlNiCo QuadraMag midrange driver, designed to deliver precise high and midrange frequencies. The Puppy module includes two 8-inch bass drivers, providing deep and impactful bass response. The adjustable spikes on the WATT module allow for precise time-domain alignment and reduce vibrations from the woofer cabinet.
