Meze Audio, the distinguished Romanian luxury audio brand, has introduced its latest creation, the Meze 109 Pro Primal headphones. Positioned as a special edition within the award-winning 109 Pro series, these headphones merge traditional woodworking mastery with contemporary audio excellence, solidifying their place in Meze's exclusive Audio Art Gallery collection.
The founder and lead designer of the company, Antonio Meze, says: “As locals of Maramures, our philosophy of life is intertwined with the ancient forests that surround us, and we are taught to appreciate and respect this craft from the youngest age. With Primal, we took up this deep-rooted skill and shaped it into a new perspective on headphone design.”
Handmade by skilled artisans with a rich heritage in wood crafting, the 109 Pro Primal presents Meze's effort to produce headphones that not only deliver exceptional sound but also boast a design that stands the test of time. The walnut earcup frames, chiseled groove by groove and meticulously sanded to perfection, showcase a seamless blend of craftsmanship and technological innovation.
The ethos behind the creation of these headphones aligns with the Romanian expression, "Graba strică treaba," translating to "Haste ruins the work" in English. This philosophy underscores Meze's dedication to taking the necessary time to ensure each product is a source of pride for both the craftsmen and the users.
A distinctive feature of the 109 Pro Primal is its sustainability-focused design. Crafted with the intent of being easily disassembled and serviced, these headphones are built to endure. Users can replace and upgrade every component, from cables to ear cups, allowing for a nearly infinite lifespan and reducing the environmental impact of electronic waste.
The walnut earcup frames, each a work of art in itself, are treated with a coat of linseed oil. This not only provides a natural matte texture but also accentuates the wood's grain, revealing its innate, captivating color. Meze's dedication to sustainable practices is further evident in the construction of the headphones, encouraging users to cherish and maintain their audio equipment for the long term.
The 109 Pro Primal, part of Meze's commitment to delivering exceptional performance, incorporates the same technology found in the original 109 Pro headphones. Recently named the Best Headphones of 2023-2024 by audio experts at the global EISA Awards, the 109 Pro series is celebrated for its outstanding audio quality.
The 109 Pro Primal features a 50mm dynamic driver with a 109 series dual-composite diaphragm. Meze's use of a carbon fiber-reinforced cellulose composite W-shaped dome allows for the reproduction of high frequencies with a claimed response of 5Hz-30KHz and an impedance of 40Ω. This design mitigates resonances that may lead to harmonic distortion, ensuring a clear and accurate audio experience.
To enhance clarity and transient response, the ultra-thin torus surrounding the dome is constructed from a Beryllium-coated semicrystalline polymer. Meze asserts that the high dampening qualities of Beryllium contribute to suppressing unwanted resonances. A ring-shaped stabilizer made of copper-zinc alloy further improves vibration absorption, reducing distortion to a minimum.
Encased in a high-precision machined aluminum frame, the diaphragm maintains superior rigidity while retaining perfect surface flatness, crucial for precision assembly and optimal performance.
The Meze 109 Pro Primal is now available for pre-order at a retail price of $999. Interested consumers can place orders through the official Meze Audio website, and select authorized stockists.
